Panic

Part of the large gap recently in entries on the blog have been due to moving. We all know the fun that moving is. Finding a new place, packing things, dealing with the utilities, unpacking, finding appropriate place for everything. Shayla's never met anyone who actually
enjoys moving.

So the more smoothly things go, the better off everyone is. We'd not been having any problems at all once Master had found a place for us to go. A few days ago he sent shayla to the bank with his signed check, ready to deposit into the account to cover the expense of the first month's payment on the new place. It's just a short distance away, so shayla took the bike. What made her double-check to make sure the check was still in her back pocket, she'll never know. But when she did it wasn't there. Not much to worry about, probably slipped out while she was riding and it would be lying along the side of the road. But she didn't see it when she rode back, moving slowly so that she wouldn't miss it. A fast, hard look in the living room didn't turn it up either.

By this time a cold knot of fear had settled into shayla's chest. Master's calm reminder of the serious clusterfuck that the loss of his signed check would cause was not the least bit helpful to shayla at this point. Back onto the bike for another look by the side of the road. Still no sign of the little leather holder she'd placed the check in. By the time shayla was back home she was compleatly panicked, and Master pulled his shoes on to help her look. For some perverse reason that made shayla's fear increase even more.

He had shayla get back onto the bike and ride slowly down the same way she had left the house. A few yards from the driveway he stopped her, pointing at the slope of grass along the side of the road. The little leather folder had slipped from her pocket & landed in the grass. Had shayla not started panicking when she'd first lost it; had she slowed down and looked more carefully, it would have been found a lot sooner. Master asked a while later after shayla's errand was complete how many times she'd passed that same spot and not seen the folder, "three, Master"

"And how many times did I walk past it, shayla?"

"None, Master"

Excellent point. Master'd been prefectly calm the whole time, even though he was as aware of the consequences of the lost check as shayla was. It's something shayla's still working on, this getting scared so easily. It's tripped her up more times than not and while she's gotten better about controlling the reflex, it's still there.

But this sure was a learning experience that shayla'll not be forgetting any time soon.
